Think meditation is just for Buddhist monks in saffron robes? Convinced you need a completely empty mind to meditate properly? Or maybe you’re wondering if you’ll have to sit cross-legged for hours on end to experience the peace everyone keeps talking about. Spoiler alert: meditation is for everyone, and it’s far more diverse and approachable than you might think.
At Biorhythm, our weekly Meditation for Everyone class - Thursdays 5-6pm - bring this diversity to life in an inclusive, welcoming space that’s safe for all people. We explore a variety of meditation techniques each week, so there’s always something new to try. Plus, every class ends with a mini sound healing session, where the soothing tones of crystal singing bowls and gongs gently guide you into deep relaxation.
Our space is intentionally designed to feel serene and peaceful. With its calming atmosphere and the option to purchase affordable 5- or 10-class packs, Biorhythm makes it easy to integrate meditation into your life. Whether you’re new to meditation or already have a practice, you’re invited to join us, take a breath, and leave feeling refreshed and rebalanced.
Meditation Styles to Explore
Meditation comes in many forms, each offering unique benefits. At Biorhythm, we weave these techniques (and more!) into our classes to help you unlock clarity, balance, and peace.
1. Mantra Magic
Ever tried repeating the words “So Hum” during your morning routine? That’s the power of mantra meditation. This ancient tool combines the repetition of a word, sound, or phrase (“mantra”) to sharpen concentration and quiet the mind.
How it works
Choose a mantra that resonates with you (examples include “Om,” “I am,” or “peace”).
Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and repeat the chosen mantra either silently or aloud.
Focus on the sound and rhythm, letting distractions fade away.
Benefits: Mantra meditation is excellent for beginners as it provides a clear focus point, making it easier to quiet that constant inner chatter. Studies suggest that mantra meditation may reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mental clarity.
2. Breathing for Peace
Your breath isn’t just fuel for life—it’s a doorway to deep calm. Breathwork meditation connects you to the present moment through conscious breathing techniques like breath retention and diaphragmatic breathing.
How it works
Breath Retention (Kumbhaka): Hold your breath for a few seconds between each inhale and exhale, promoting stillness.
Diaphragmatic Breathing: Breathe deeply into your belly instead of your chest for slow, steady breaths that soothe your nervous system.
Benefits: Breathwork may lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and engage the body’s natural relaxation response. After all, when you control your breath, you control your mind.
3. Nidra Nirvana
Yoga Nidra, or “yogic sleep,” takes relaxation to the next level. Think of it as a mix between deep rest and guided hypnosis—perfect for anyone in need of rejuvenation.
How it works
Lie down in a quiet, cozy space.
Listen to a guided Yoga Nidra meditation (we often include this in our classes!).
You’ll be taken through body scans, breathing exercises, and visualizations designed to lull you into profound relaxation.
Benefits: This meditative practice is a game-changer for those seeking relief from insomnia or anxiety. Just 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra practice is equivalent to hours of deep sleep.
4. Grounding for Stillness
When was the last time you felt truly connected to the earth beneath you? Grounding meditation invites you to reconnect with nature—and yourself—by focusing on your physical connection to the earth.
How it works
Sit outside (or indoors if that’s more comfortable) and place your bare feet on the ground.
Close your eyes and visualize your energy connecting deeply with the earth. Breathe and notice the sensation of stability beneath you.
Benefits: Grounding is particularly helpful for those who feel unbalanced or overwhelmed, bringing you back to the present moment while reducing stress.
5. Meta-Meditation for the Soul
Also known as Loving-Kindness Meditation, this heart-centered practice encourages profound compassion for yourself and others.
How it works
Sit comfortably and silently repeat phrases like “May I be happy,” “May I be healthy,” “May I feel peace.”
Gradually extend those wishes toward loved ones, acquaintances, and eventually even those you find challenging.
Benefits: Loving-Kindness Meditation has been shown to increase empathy and reduce feelings of loneliness.
6. Moving with Intention
Don’t like sitting still? Movement meditation might be your go-to. From mindful walking to flowing yoga poses, movement allows meditation through physical activity.
How it works
Take a slow walk in nature, focusing on the rhythm of your steps and the sensations around you.
Combine this with yoga or tai chi practices to merge mindful movement with focused breathing.
Benefits: Movement meditation is ideal for those who struggle with traditional seated forms. It relieves tension and encourages the release of endorphins for a happier, calmer mind.
7. Sound Healing
Ever noticed how a favourite song instantly lifts your mood? Sound meditation taps into that same concept, using vibrations from singing bowls, gongs, or tuning forks to help you feel centered and balanced.
How it works
In every meditation class at Biorhythm, we conclude with a mini sound healing session. Lay down, close your eyes, and allow the sound frequencies to wash over you, calming your body and mind.
Benefits: Sound meditation can lower anxiety and guide your brain into deeply relaxed states.
